art is for all.
as an educator having worked in multiple districts, communities, and age groups, i am tremendously aware of the range of ability and skill with which my students enter my class. i recognize that many have had very limited art experience and exposure and many who have been making art their entire life. this is why i strive to meet each student where they are, giving them the tools and instruction they need to excel and become a better artist and observer than they were when they walked in.
i structure my lessons so that they incorporate art made by a variety of artists from differing backgrounds so that each student may find themselves represented in the art we study. this approach not only provides an engaging entry point for students, it may also introduce them to a new way of making, seeing, and doing.
finally, i find that flexibility in my approach is key. what suits one student on one day may be completely different for another student on a different day.
